The key art required colorization of the scanned-in 8 x 10 image of lead actor Steve McQueen. It was then composited with an image of co-star Faye Dunaway, masking and placing it on a thematic composed background. The background was created with an abstract texture and stock images of chess pieces and a board. This tied in with one of the films more iconic scenes where the two main characters spar over a cat-and-mouse game of chess.
The key art was created primarily for the DVD clamshell packaging. It was also used by the studio for other purposes for promoting the release of the film on DVD. The design work also included a 4 page insert booklet, as well as the DVD clamshell packaging covers.
The title art was created digitally, and was a new design for the DVD release of the film. The type was laid out in Illustrator then brought into Photoshop, where a brushed metal texture was created and applied.
